What will you do?

We are looking for a senior software engineer to lead a small team of engineers to work on conformance tools. The software tools that you create will be used by software engineers throughout the container shipping sector (globally) in order to test and verify their applications.

You will define the application architecture and approach to conformance within our client. You care about concepts such as traceability, correctness, test-driven development and quality. You will be writing Java code and reviewing pull requests from others that will be available open source on GitHub.

Our client sets technical IT standards for the container shipping industry. These standards underpin core business processes in container shipping. Our technical standards are primarily defined as REST APIs. They are adopted globally by parties such as ocean carriers, ports, solution providers and a wide range of companies that either send or receive goods.

Adopters need to be certain that they have correctly implemented a particular technical standard. Our client envisages this conformance being demonstrated using a set of conformance tools. This approach is common in the area of technical standardisation. We will also be hosting conformance services, so the role includes some DevOps activities.

Initial work in this area has established a toolset as follows:

• Java (this is not negotiable – you must be an experienced Java developer)
• REST APIs
• GitHub
• Spring Boot
• Cucumber
• AWS / Kubernetes

As lead engineer, you will be responsible for determining the best components and toolset going forward.

Your responsibilities:

• Write code. This is a hands-on role 🙂
• Take part in agile DevOps processes, working in sprints.
• Define the application architecture for conformance at our client.
• Continuously optimise the conformance approach of our client.
• Guide, coach and lead the work of other software engineers working on conformance.
• Work with other DevOps teams that are implementing reference implementations.
• Coordinate with the Senior Solution Architect.
• Report to the Chief Information Officer.

Requirements

• Good stakeholder management skills
• Experience in leading and motivating a team
• Strong experience as a (lead) Java developer.
• Expertise in REST APIs.
• Bachelor-level technical qualification, ideally in Computer Science / Software Engineering or similar.
• Minimum 7 years of experience as an IT professional
• Experience in project(s) with a strong TDD / BDD approach.
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Experience of working in an agile DevOps team
